Art Expectations for March 16-27th, 2020
Welcome to Art!
I am excited to have Art with you and I look forward to getting to know all of you. We will be creating a lot of artwork this term and learning different drawing/painting techniques that can be difficult and challenging. You skills will grow, no matter what artistic level you are starting at this year. The following are some things you should know about our 8th grade drawing and painting class and the International Baccalaureate program.

IB- International Baccalaureate
Scarlett Middle School is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School that embraces the adolescent learner, establishment of trusting relationships, and development of independent, responsible citizens. The IB approach is grounded on the following five pillars:

Course Description & Overview
This 12-week course is designed for you to begin to develop drawing and painting skills. We will work on building skills in drawing what you see, portrait drawing, basic color theory, composition, and develop the skills to render a more realistic drawing. This course will provide you with a foundation to build upon in future
Expectations & Citizenship
Students are expected to:
Citizenship grades are used to establish eligibility to participate in school clubs, sports and after-school activities. Student marks will be based on the following criteria: classroom behavior, attitude, effort, motivation, preparation, attendance and contribution.
- Know and follow all of the rules in the student handbook.
- Come to class with supplies and assignments; be ready to start on time.
- Participate productively in all parts of the lesson.
- Read and write readily and regularly.
- Respect themselves and others.
- Care about and monitor their academic and social progress.

Daily Class Materials:
1. Pencil-you will need one daily!
2. Process Journal-this stays in class and is used daily!
3. Planner- this will be your pass if you need to leave the classroom.

Grading Practices & Procedures:
Grades will be broken down into the following categories:
Formative Assessments (In-Class Work, Bellwork, Practice Drawings/Paintings) - 40%
Daily activities and routines are built into each student’s grade. Students are required to fill out the bellwork each day it is provided as well as participate in daily drawing and painting exercises/worksheets. All of the inclass work will be kept in the student’s Process Journal, which is kept in the art classroom. I will collect the journals over the term and give a grade for the work completed.
Summative Assessments (Projects) – 60%
Students will also have summative assessments. These are our longer drawing or painting projects that the skills we develop in our formative assessments build upon.
Grades & Monitoring Student Progress:
Grades will be kept current and can be accessed online through PowerSchool. As an authorized IB World School, students will also receive an MYP Achievement Level score determined by performance in 4 MYP Objectives. These objectives are scored using a MYP rubric with a rating scale of 0-8. This scale has been converted to a traditional grade using the conversion chart below:

A variety of assessment types and learning targets will be used throughout the course. Students are responsible for monitoring their own progress in this class. To help you stay on top of your grades, PowerSchool will be updated frequently. Checking PowerSchool often will make you aware of how you are progressing in this class.
